Shots seek Woking quadruple

THE non-league double dream was washed away with the rain on Saturday but the Shots still do have a second trophy to challenge for: the Setanta Shield (Conference Cup).

Tonight (Tuesday) they entertain Woking in the southern semi-final. The tie will be finished on the night, with extra-time and penalties to come after 90 minutes, if required.

It’s the fourth time this season that Aldershot have played neighbours Woking and the Shots have a perfect record so far, winning twice in the league by the odd goal over the Christmas period and then coming from behind to win 4-2 at Kingfield in the FA Trophy in January.

Woking have had a torrid run of form in the Blue Square Premier over the last month and are without a win in six, in which they have lost to both Northwich Victoria and Farsley Celtic.

But they were unfortunate to lose 1-0 at Cambridge United on Saturday and it’s not so long ago that they were beating Burton Albion and outplaying Aldershot too.

The Shots only came good in the last 20 minutes of that FA Trophy win, in which Marvin Morgan and Jason Norville gave the Aldershot defence the run-around. Norville was outstanding on debut that day but has since failed to fire.

Manager Frank Gray will have skipper Tom Hutchinson back from suspension at the back and must decide whether or not to recall Norville and set-piece specialist Giuseppe Sole. Former Farnborough Town player Matt Pattison will pull the strings from midfield.

Gary Waddock is expected to field a strong XI, although Ben Harding may be rested. Scott Donnelly should start in midfield and Scott Davies is set to return from illness.

Anthony Charles serves the second of a two-match ban from the defence, where Rob Gier may possibly return at right back. Ricky Newman is also pushing for a rare start.

"We move on," said Waddock after the Ebbsfleet FA Trophy semi-final defeat on Saturday. "We now have another semi-final, against Woking, so things aren’t too bad, are they?"

Kick-off at the Recreation Ground is at 7.45pm. The winners of the tie will play the victors of the northern section in the final — with Rushden & Diamonds set to play Burton Albion or Halifax Town (playing tonight) in the other semi-final.
