Penned it like Saunders

April 16, 2008

"I am keeping it short this week. It was a great win at Gosport and we demonstrated all the differing facets of our game, those facets that have put us virtually over the Championship line. Our early blitz put the game to bed and we played some great football in the first half, but credit to Gosport who showed in the second half why they have been on such a good run. News of the Hayes equaliser against Didcot sparked a frenzied and champagne drenched response in the dressing room. Savo [Ian Savage] conducted the orchestra while Clemmo [Andy Clement] and Lyall [Beazley] poured the Moet down everyones' neck. It might be deemed as premature, but even Carol Vordeman would be surprised by the freak maths that stands in our way of a deserved league title. As I walked to the Gosport bar I did feel a little emotional, and it was great to see the faces of those involved. We have all come a very long way, especially those who I met back in June when days like Saturday were just a distant dream. Those "stick it on my tab" beers tasted ever so sweet and it was great of the Gosport lads to offer their congratulations as they did.

Ironically, a good number of us continued the party in Windsor on Saturday night. This coming Saturday Windsor & Eton come to Cherrywood looking to spoil the party, and they still have an awful lot to play for. When Clemmo and I assessed the fixtures a few weeks back we had earmarked this Saturday as the day we wanted to win it. It won't be easy and I am sure the occassion will bring the best out of Keith Scott's side, but we want to cross the line in style with a home win for the supporters and all associated to enjoy. I hope, and I am sure, that there will be a great turnout and I would like to hear 90 minutes of song. We can make it a day to remember, and a day on which we manage to hook in a new generation of lifelong Farnborough FC supporters.

The fat lady is warming up, and the more expensive champagne is on ice as the "big time charlies" are nearly there."

"Apologies for the delay since my last column, I have been a busy boy. With the golfing high season now in full swing my work has stepped up and I also had a two day jolly to Paris for the England friendly last week. Whilst it was clear for all to see that the game itself was not of much quality, the banter of an away day with England can never be questioned. Enjoying a pint of Grimbergen lager syrup before lark song, welting a football around a train station, enjoying the finest of Parisian cuisine by "going grande" in McDonalds, and losing money on roulette at 1am are what following the St George are all about. A truly high brow and cultural experience.

And of course in that 2 weeks we have had a number of games, with some highs and lows.

Unfortunately I picked up a hamstring strain in the warm up at Uxbridge and missed the Easter programme. Sky TV would have billed the weekend a "crunch time" and that was very much what we felt in the dressing room. The feeling in that same dressing on Easter Monday at 5 o'clock was very despondent. There was a very low attendance in the Fleet Town bar by our lads and we gradually sloped off with our one point from the two games, and in fairness we were lucky to get that after the miss of the season at Uxbridge two days earlier. Clemmo called us in to train the following day but we just sat down and had a casual chat amongst ourselves, a couple of cheeky beers and put the weekend well and truly to bed.

My injury however did allow me to head up to meet some of the sponsored walkers in the Oatsheaf in Fleet. There was a healthy turn out and it appeared as if everyone had a good day, up until kick off that was! Great credit to everyone who took part and the amount of money raised shows a fantastic effort. The fundraising target is creeping nearer so well done to Bob Perry and his crew of merry men.

I was pleasantly surprised to pass my fitness test at Andover. Having been here since day one of pre-season, to miss the run in would have been awful. To also miss first hand the show Wheels [Darren Wheeler] put on with his four goals and all round display would have been disappointing too. We, and him in particular, were scintillating at times and 6-0 was a fair reflection of an enjoyable afternoon at a great little club. Once again results were favourable and there was a real feel good factor in the bar after the game. Great to see Harks [Paul Harkness] back in the picture, mainly as he understands adult banter and isn't shy of getting his round in either.

Barring a mathematical miracle two wins should see us lifting the giant stingray of a shield in the late April sunshine. Whilst we know we are close to achieving our season aim we have not lost sight of the fact that we are not over the line. It would be great to win it at home to Windsor & Eton so we can have two days to remember, but it's a case of closing it out professionally and clinically.

As you all know there is no game this week. I am sure this means a number of you will be roped into creosoting the fence, traipsing round Primark with a fishing net of cheap smalls, or if you are very unlucky, an afternoon at the mother-in-law's. The boys however have been instructed to go on a team bonding afternoon after training. "Gaffers orders darling....honest."  It is very rare that I get ready for a team night out at 11am!

This week also saw us progress in the Hants Senior Cup. Winning this trophy does mean an awful lot to us and although there was an air of training session at times we are pleased to be through. Personally speaking I have reached my target of 20 goals and finally won the bet that Clemmo and I had at Cowes IOW during pre-season.

Just a little message for Bethany New, our own 'high street honey'. All the very best in the latter stages of the competition, you certainly have the credentials to go as far as you want.....probably Zoo or Nuts magazine. It was nice to see her in my No 7 shirt, and if she wins I am more than happy to treat her to a Harvester combo meal. I read that she likes hairy and smelly men so I haven't showered for weeks and Wooz [Dave Woozley] is donating some of his shoulder hair clippings for me to glue to my face.

On to Gosport,"

"It’s taken a lot longer than we hoped but we have finally reached the summit and although we would have liked to have been there sooner, it feels like we couldn’t have timed it better. Three straight victories and no goals against sees us back in the type of form we need to be to go on and win the league. In fairness there is more to come in terms of performance, but I am sure everyone would agree it’s results and not performances that are top of the wish list right now.

It was certainly a weekend of surprise results in the FA Cup and it was pleasing that we were not on the wrong end of a coupon-busting result at Bracknell. I heard a quote saying Bracknell matched us up until we scored. Although I whole-heartedly agree with that it is not much of a claim as we scored in the 6th minute on one of those rare occasions when the ref’s decision went our way. The defender was adjudged to have handled the ball but the circular mud mark on his face certainly suggested otherwise. We quite frankly blitzed them for the remainder of the half and no one could argue with the 4-0 scoreline at the break. Great to see Barts [Michael Bartley] off the mark and showing the form we know he can. Although we would have liked to have scored more, 5-0 was a great result. I thought the noise that those who travelled generated was exceptional and something I hope to continue to hear from the terraces as we chase this title. It is a great help. As for the rather amusing "He thinks he is a journalist" chant, for many years I have also thought I was a footballer! Some of the lads believe I write this column with the aid of a thesaurus. Whilst some of them said they haven't seen Jurassic Park, I simply say it is just the foreign concept of using a brain.

To say we owed Thatcham one was an understatement. First, no one has done the double on us, and they bore witness to our worst showing this term the other week. We didn't want them thinking we weren't deservedly up at the top. I thought the first half was very even and we went in unsurprisingly scoreless. But the way we came out of the traps in the second half certainly set the tone for the rest of the game. Lyall’s [Beazley] tremendous save onto the bar aside, we controlled the half with that professional approach I have touched upon in recent weeks. Although we had to wait until the 79th minute we took a deserved lead. I have been on a bit of a famine of late and when Wheels  [Darren Wheeler] dropped that cross on my foot, I wasn't passing up on that chance. I thought Darren was a pleasure to watch in that second half and the bane of yet another right back’s life. The second goal probably was what we had earned, Dolyey [Adam Doyle] is claiming it, but I have my doubts.

We welcome Hillingdon Borough to Cherrywood Road on Saturday and they are an unknown quantity to a large degree. They have had a great run in the League Cup and are in decent form in the league itself. They are one of the few clubs where I am unable to say, “I spoke to one of the lads down there the other day,” but like with all the teams we have hosted this term I am sure will come with the attitude that it is their cup final. To be top means everything to the dressing room and we will be doing everything to stay there right to the end. Two home games is a perfect platform to put pressure on the Diddymen [Didcot Town] and time for them to feel the heat of the chase.

A few of the boys are heading to the Lakeside after the Hillingdon game on Saturday for a Status Quo night. Interesting choice of night out but let’s hope that it is with a win in the bag. I can’t see myself going ‘down down’ there but if you're going, whatever you want.

See you Saturday when someone with biceps might have the armband back!"

March 5, 2008

Business as usual. Clemmo said to us that we had always responded well to a defeat and Saturday, I am pleased to say, was no different. We dominated Taunton from start to finish without ever really getting out of second gear, especially in the first half. This was a fact not lost on the boss and we did get the rocket at half time. It could and probably should have been more. Cards [Nic Ciardini] is not having the best of time in front of goal at the moment but his performances in training show that a goal is not far away. The same has to be said for Barts [Michael Bartley] who is edging ever closer to his first goal in our colours and I keep telling him he will get the one that wins it for us. Talking of goals Wooz's [Dave Woozley] header has now been officially declared the slowest goal of all time and Kris Akabusi will be down from the Guinness Book of Records before our next home fixture. Great to see Rummy [Leigh Rumbold], who I thought was our best performer, chipping in again as it is a facet of his game he needed to develop, and it appears as if he really has. Even if it was laid on a silver platter for him by the magic wand!

The only slightly worrying things were the injuries to Marshy, Wheels and Doyley [Rob Marshall, Darren Wheeler and Adam Doyle]. Wheels appears to pick up a knock every week. Probably down to everyone kicking him but his legs do seem to be made of glass! Doyley on the other hand has a bruised foot probably from dropping one of his ever growing number of Cava bottles on it! Any chance of his mum not picking man-of-the-match every week?

Again, there were favourable results at the top but Didcot are a machine at the moment and have very winnable fixtures in the coming weeks. The form they showed in the first half at our place is proving not to be a one off. Windsor's form must also be noted since the arrival of Keith Scott, and they could have a big say in the title and play off shake up.

So, on to Bracknell, who we know will be fighting for their lives and therefore must be considered a threat. I spoke with one of their lads the other day and they are confident of beating the drop. Last week they had an encouraging win away to Andover and I assume they will approach the game against ourselves with nothing to lose. Now, what can be said about Larges Lane? Without too much disrespect it is the belly button of the footballing world. I cannot stand the place. Sloped, sandy, bobbly and rusty. Some like to dress this up as a homely little club with character. Well, I don't, it's horrible. A big plus they have is the support in a loyal Barmy Army aided with musical instruments. I have learned this is Paddy's last game before heading to the Big Apple (the only bit of fruit he would have seen for a while), but I am sure he can lead an able volume of repost.

Locals to the ground. 50 yards away is The Old Manor. A pub from the much ridiculed yet ever popular Wetherspoon chain, it offers a young buggy pushing crowd and pritt stick carpet. A big plus though is obviously the price and they do offer the sensationally hoppy experience that is a bottle of Peroni. I am struggling to find one for you real ale fans. Can only really offer my local by Ascot Racecourse called the Duke of Edinburgh only 10 minutes drive from the ground. An Arkells pub with hearty fare. Please say my name if you actually manage to find it and I am sure Nick the landlord will sort me out some commission when I head back there with three points and a couple of goals in my pocket on Saturday night.

Come on the Boro,

Well, a mixed bag since I last wrote. The two wins over Oxford and Paulton were at the time seen as invaluable in kick starting our push for the title. While their significance should not be forgotten the debacle at Thatcham that followed showed only too clearly that it wasn't the springboard we all had hoped for. Taking them chronilogically the Oxford performance was unspectacular but impressively solid and patient. We were well worth the three points and although the goals were scrappy and a little fortuitous they were no less deserved. I could not believe that I was being asked if Tim Henman [Ian Oliver] has meant to score with his cross. Are people for real? Although some of his crosses do give the impression he is shooting! Barts [Michael Bartley] tried his hardest to claim the first in the dressing room afterwards but it would be unfair to take it away from the defender who bust a gut to put it in for us. We certainly left the ground buoyed by another win over a close rival, with instructions to rest with only a day before the trip to Paulton.

The long trip to Somerset gave us the chance to watch the Didcot game on DVD, and Luke Evans the opportunity to again say that neither of his offences waranted penalties. The video was inconclusive. We arrived at Paulton a good two hours before kick off and with no life form for miles around we sat on the bus as we watched the night get colder and colder. It was becoming clear that it was going to be a tough night. As we warmed up there was a section of the pitch on the wing that was more suited to the Guildford Flames but the referee gave it the go ahead and we were happy, if a little wary. What followed was what I felt was the most enjoyable game of the season. Both teams played well and took the game to each other. Winning in such dramatic style made it all the sweeter but Paulton have given us a real test in both games and if it wasn't for them continually playing catch up I am sure they would be mixing it with the four of us at the top. We celebrated with a few casual lagers on the bus and watched Sexy Beast on DVD. "Grovesnor...Friday..be there...your name's rowntree." Superb!

As enjoyable and well deserved as those games were there is no doubting that the trip to West Berkshire was at the other end of the scale, almost equally as painful as waiting for the level crossing barriers to go up! We approached the game well and warmed up suitably. The vibe the previous week's successes had generated was maintained but sadly we never got going. It was one of those flat performances that is sometimes very difficult to explain. I can find no real reason for it but having been in football long enough now I know they can happen. Much has been said about the abuse directed at the team and management and whilst we understand that all supporters pay and therefore have a right to voice an opinion it did feel a little excessive on the day. A great beauty of the non-league game and supporting a side at this level is the more personal and intimate relationship between supporters and playing staff and we don't want to lose that rapport. That being said there are some broad shoulders in the dressing room and it is dusted off easily enough. Whilst the result from our friends at Slough lightened the mood a fraction, it was a missed opportunity and we knew it. But we have an onwards and upwards attitude.

We have won six of our last eight games and it is with confidence that we take on Taunton looking to avenge the defeat at their place back in January. We want to get to the top as qucikly as possible and need to take maximum points. After training on Tuesday I quickly dashed to check The Peacocks out at Burnham. I was quite impressed with how they defended and counter attacked at pace and with the ball on the floor. An opportunity they must grab with both hands when they play away from home!

Every weekend gets more important from now on and results feed in from elsewhere. Whilst we want Howsy [Glen Howes] to do us a favour down at Gosport [against Didcot]and my old mates to nick something round the corner[Burnham take on Fleet], it is in our hands. That's ours as a club from players, staff, board and supporters so let's all pull the same way starting three o'clock Saturday.

February 13, 2008

"Hello All,

First things first this is not a farewell column. I must admit that the well documented approach from AFC Wimbledon did excite me and they were probably the only club that I wouldn't have turned down flat. I had a couple of conversations with Terry Brown and Stuart Cash and they spoke well of the club and of how I was part of the plans as the club moved forward. It was a fantastic opportunity and to all my mates both in and out of the game was classed as a bit of a no brainer. For me it was never a clear cut decision. I signed back in June when Cherrywood Road looked a shambles and that's when I first met Simon and Clemmo. Over the past nine months or so I have seen the club grow at a rate of knots, spoken to board members and many fans alike about how exciting the times are ahead. I have seen many, many, many, many players come and go since the re-birth at Godalming but I signed with a goal of winning the league in mind and that is yet to be achieved. Granted I could have gone to AFC and been part of a promotion there too but I wanted to share a success with people I have grown close to and whom I have seen first hand strive immensely hard to get this club back up the pyramid. So I have committed to the club and to Simon and Clemmo especially, and I am delighted to do so with a renewed enthusiasm for more goals and points. When you see me dancing round like a prize fool come that sunny day on April 26th you'll all see why.

Anyway enough of that, what about my penalty! An inch from being perfect, but pretty much epitomised our day in front of goal. We had an abundance of chances in both halves with the blame being pretty much shared about. Rummers and Marcus will lay blame on the sun for first half missed headers but sadly we dont have the same excuse for the second half. I class it as one of those days but we all knew as Clemmo shouted the paint of the walls in the dressing room that it was a performance well below par. The type of performance we can ill afford at this, the business end of the season. It's not one that we will dwell on and one we put to bed at a hard but banter-ful training session on Tuesday. Good to see Savo  back from his transatlantic adventure and nice to see the fine tin swelling as a result. The idea of Hampshire's finest mockney speaking to a conference of 300 people does make me laugh. With the dollar so weak he was able to buy himself two new running styles as well!

We look ahead to Saturday with much confidence after ten points from the last available 12 and with a proud record to keep up against the other sides in the top four. There is no doubt we raise our concentration if not necessarily our game for the big ones. Oxford have strenghtened massively over the past two months and it will be a game of monumental proportions and one we are all excited about. 1-0 or 5-4 we don't care how it comes, it's a must win.

An old mate of mine Yashwa Romeo will be out to get us on Saturday in this Valentines week but while you are all feeding each other oysters and rolling out the Barry White, on Thursday night we will be training hard. Sure it will be the cause of many a row for the spouses but they need to remember that football is the boys' first love.

Looking back to last weeks column and the ensuing controversy about my comments made about the abuse I received at Slough. Sadly it appears as if I was misunderstood. I fully accept that every fan has his opinion and was merely stating it meant I received some jovial remarks in the dressing room as a result of them. You can shout what you like at me, I think you have all seen I am the type who can take it and not be too bothered. The ballboy incident is another matter, now someone billed it as me kicking it at him from two yards, I was 40 yards away and just kicking it near him. But a point of advice, just be careful when walking behind the goal with cups of tea. Are we really going for the top corner?!"

See you all Saturday and please bring your singing voices as it could be the difference.

"Well everything appears to be rosy in the Cherrywood garden again. I think recent results have shown a togetherness forged through a willingness to work harder collectively. Credit to the gaffer for this, and the boys have responded really well to the minor mid-January blip.

The Burnham win epitomised our new-found professionalism. Solid and compact with more patient attacking in the first period, and then our extra quality shone through in second and the goals came. The news prior to kick off that Barts [Michael Bartley] had joined the fold was most welcome for everyone. I played with Michael at Burnham a couple of seasons ago and he is a very hardworking forward with a good touch and eye for goal. The run for the penalty was typical of what he is about. A top lad as well, and he has already settled into dressing room dynamic; his MC Hammer dance is only a matter of time away. Another goal for Rummers, [Leigh Rumbold] and his energy once again was something to be admired. I thought Joe Tabiri was exceptional and gave us great security and a good platform for attack.

Burnham’s defence battled hard but the lads at Slough on Tuesday night took it to another level. The way they fought for their lives in their own 18 yard box was nothing short of miraculous at times. Boris Becker [Richard Barnard] in goal pulled off save after save. Although we trailed twice it didn’t faze us and we ultimately got what we deserved, and maybe what we might not have got a month ago. The pitch became an absolute joke and this twinned with the poor lighting made it extremely difficult, but Clemo had said we must try to keep playing football around their box and it will come. The celebrations after the winner and subsequently in dressing room showed this win was as big as any other this year. A special mention to the Slough fans who were fantastic all night. They supported their team beyond the 90 minutes and if they play like that every week they will surely be safe. Well I hope so anyway.

I would like to also thank the Boro fan for his notable positive criticism of "get Saunders off, he is a liability" as I was taking the free kick before Doyley’s [Adam Doyle] goal. Always a good thing to bring up in post game dressing room banter so I thank you! Can someone also answer me as to how close you have to go to a referee when he talks to you? Apparently a yard is not close enough these days. Needless to say Clemo was keen to knock me out at half time for it! I will pay my fine...probably with the money he will owe me for 20 goals!

Looking ahead to Saturday and Andover. While their form is worse than Pete Doherty’s they have not been goal shy and pushed Fleet to the limit the other week, so we must be aware. At home we will be more able to play our passing game, but if we team this with the physical application demonstrated on this week’s quagmires then there will only be one winner.

Just a little reminder to get your half days holiday forms into your bosses for the 18th. A lot of you know the way to Paulton already and for those that didn’t travel previously be sure to try the local brew called Butcombe. Still a source of amusement to some of the lads. No idea why!
There is a well-timed team outing this Saturday night. Time for Pesto [Liam Pestle] to drag out some rascal clobber, Cards [Nic Ciardini] to pack his fake ID and 'someone' to dust down the lasso. Keep a special eye out for the odd fresh haircut and splattering of sunbed at Saturday’s game."

Onwards and upwards,

(After Tuesday, a very) Soggy Saunders

January 28, 2008

"First, a big thanks to all of you who travelled down to Taunton last Wednesday for what I classed to my dad as the lowest point of the season. We started quite well but were naive and didn't sufficiently adapt our game for large periods allowing the home side to grow in confidence and subsequently take a lead we couldn't reverse. I missed both their goals as I was cleaning the tail between my legs in the showers but we still had chances to grab a point from what I saw after that. Cards going especially close and Bubby probably should have gone down but stayed on his feet and was unfortunate to get a bobble. Much was said about the "wicket" down there. I heard it classed as a cow field, I can reassure it you it wasn't that good. A very quiet bus pulled up back at the ground in the early hours.

We replied in perfect style on Saturday. Workmanlike and industrious at times but showed greater professionalism in being patient and closing the game out. Even more impressive as there were a number of changes for one reason or another. Special credit to Lieutenant Doyle who slotted in the back four comfortably and to Justin for his clean plate, err sorry his clean sheet. It was well deserved after the great patience he has shown before getting his chance. He did complain of cramp of the ribcage in the bar afterwards but I was pretty sure it was indigestion!!!

Was good to watch the second half in the PRE. Typically fruity language from usual suspects and they were given backing vocals by the Chipmunks! It would be much appreciated by the dressing room if a song could be made up about the size of Ian Oliver's head.

The top four are breaking away now and every one of them is strengthening at this crucial point of the season. Credit must go to Fleet who have gone on a hell of run since the Boxing Day massacre. The way they are grinding the results out is to be admired. I saw Oxford at Burnham the other week and on a difficult night they too earnt a creditable draw with a solid team discipline. We all saw what Didcot had to offer in the first half at home and it's going to be a hell of a run-in.

Looking ahead to Saturday and what is a massive game. Burnham's recent form has been almost as patchy as their pitch of late but we will need to be at our maximum to get the win. I was gutted to only make bench for the home game because of my dodgy "two pound coins" and to lose to my old team was a real wounder. I speak to a few of the lads down there regularly and I know Mudgey [Burnham boss,Dave Mudge] will have them fired up and maybe with instructions to kick the prawn sandwich in midfield. I owe Burnham a great deal but if I score I will not be one of those who doesn't celebrate out of respect!

Would be great to see a load of you there making some noise as it does help us and be good to show a few of my old muckers why I moved on.

On the boozer front, for the kids I would suggest our old post training haunt the Red Lion on the High Street as it has a pool table, big screens and the chance of a bird, but for the adults The Pheasant is more your real ale sort of venue about 100 yards from the ground."

See you soon

January 17, 2008

"Hello and welcome to my first and quite possibly last column. I was delighted to be asked, if a little disappointed to hear that Nathan Bailey was first choice. Sadly Walnut had to decline the offer once he heard he would first have to learn to write. Each week I'll be giving you a vetted insight into the dressing room goings on, some of our thoughts and anything I deem of amusement.

A bit of a flat week it must be said. One in which we were confident of six points sees us with only the one. Obviously the elements deprived us putting right Saturday's wrongs against Marlow but it's important that care is taken over the Cherrywood pitch. Credit must go to the ground staff for keeping it in such good condition all season as it is key to our success.

Despite getting the late equaliser on Saturday the game against Winchester certainly felt like a defeat. We are only too aware that sides will come to our place looking to frustrate us but to concede three times against a side so unadventurous is unacceptable. I have never seen a side make two defensive subs before half time and time waste in the tunnel before! We take a collective responsibility for defending and making teams work for their goals. We must all show more discipline in this side of our game as clean sheets will undoubtedly win us games. This was a point Laurel and Hardy so eloquently put to us after the game. Going forward we can be unplayable and we will continue to entertain but not at the price of results.

One thing Saturday again highlighted to me was how short changed we are getting with officials at home this season, I think my frustration was clear for all to see. My fear is that in an effort not to buckle under the pressure of our larger crowds the officials sway the other way to not show weakness. I hope this changes soon and in the meantime I will make an effort to channel my anger in more useful means!!

We appear to have struck it lucky with Michael Barrymore [Barima] being around on a more permanent basis. He and Wheels give us more width than a pair of Roachey's shorts, something I know fans bemoaned a lack of at times earlier in the season.

I am also "delighted" to welcome two more midfielders [Tabiri and Barron] to the club, after all it is all about the squad! I am sure Tabs and Bazza (I assume) will be made most welcome into the bosom of the dressing room. They have good pedigree and are at a good hungry age.

Looking ahead to Slough on Saturday, I know a few lads down there and in fairness they have turned things round a little of late so it won't be easy despite their lowly league position. Beaconsfield SYCOB for those that have never been is a "homely" little ground with one sheltered terrace behind goal. One in which I am sure the PRE lads can make some noise. The town itself has some cracking boozers as I am sure you will find out and the bar at the ground is nice enough. Fingers crossed the rain holds off and if we perform as we know we can you can expect three more points in the bag.

Thanks for your continued support, it is appreciated by us all, and keep your fingers off the panic buttons."
