Police issue driving advice ahead of the Easter break

Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit has issued travel advice to drivers ahead of the Easter getaway.

Thousands of people are predicted to take to the roads today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) for the first Bank Holiday weekend of 2008.

The force has a clear message for those planning a long journey this Easter: make sure you stay awake at the wheel.

“It’s going to be a busy period for the roads,” said Farnbrough Roads Policing Unit inspector, Peter Hughes.

“Many people may be thinking of travelling this evening (Thursday) after work to beat the traffic.

“If you are going on a long journey, make sure you leave plenty of time to arrive at your destination and prepare for your trip.

"It is also worth taking a supply of food and drink with you in case you experience delays.”

“Driving requires plenty of concentration. Motorways in particular can be monotonous, so try to drive for no more than two hours at a time, and take a break in between.

“The simple fact is tiredness can kill. If you do feel drowsy at the wheel, it’s vital you find a safe place to stop and have a rest.

"The hard shoulder is for emergencies only; stopping there can put you at risk.

“Bear in mind that although the roads are quietest between midnight and 6am, it’s also the time we’re naturally the most tired.”

Rain has  been forecast for Thursday and Friday which will make the roads slippery and more hazardous, so drivers are asked to keep a safe distance between themselves and the vehicle in front.

Inspector Hughes said:  “The Easter holidays have come early this year, and we want everyone to enjoy their time off. But we’d also like to make sure everyone arrives at their destination and not in hospital or worse.”
